Marathon Reading Fundraisers

Our biggest fundraising each year consists of a marathon reading of a classic work of literature. Teams of readers take on the responsibility of performing a section of the text and collecting donations in support of their participation. By the end of the event (sometimes 24 hours later!), we have heard the whole text read from start to finish. Over the years we’ve explored Homer’s Odyssey, Dante’s Divine Comedy, both Marlowe’s and Goethe’s takes on Dr. Faustus, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey.

Sponsor your favourite team by making a donation through Canada Helps, selecting “Odyssey Live” from the drop-down list of Funds, and naming your team in the comment!

2026: Odyssey Live!

From 6pm on Friday, April 10 until 6pm on Saturday, April 11, our intrepid teams of readers will be making their way through the 24 books of Homer’s Odyssey, chronicling Greek hero Odysseus’ long and treacherous journey. Odyssey Live! will begin in Book 1 and proceed through a new book each hour until we’ve seen our hero home.

This year’s event will be held in the KTS Lecture Hall in the New Academic Building at the University of King’s College (6350 Coburg Rd, Halifax NS).

Stay tuned for our team lineup!

Past Events

Last year’s fundraiser was Jane Austen Live! held on November 30, 2024 at the University of King’s College. For 12 hours 12 teams of readers made their way through all of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, a story of an unlikely novel-obsessed heroine whose overactive imagination gets her into trouble.
