The Halifax Humanities Society is excited to offer a new session of HalifaxThinks beginning in November 2020! The course is offered entirely online this year and so participants can join from anywhere that has internet access.
HalifaxThinks is an opportunity for anyone interested in philosophy, literature, and art to take a University-level course of study and conversation that works with their busy schedule. Its curriculum is based on the interdisciplinary Great Books model offered in the Foundation Year Program (FYP) at the University of King’s College.
Students receive 12 audio lectures written and delivered by university professors which they can listen to at their convenience. Twice a month, all participants are invited to a real-time Zoom tutorial where they get to discuss the work with a university professor and with others in the class.
This session of HalifaxThinks is entitled “The Medieval Period,” and it corresponds roughly with the major works from the second section of the Foundation Year Program. Students will learn about early texts in the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions; art and architecture from the Medieval period; and Dante’s magnum opus, The Divine Comedy.
This course is offered by donation, with $400 as the suggested amount. All proceeds go to support The Halifax Humanities Society’s other programs: Perspective 2020, Halifax Humanities 101, and the Angus Johnston Seminar. These programs offer non-credit education in the Humanities to adults living on low incomes, completely free of charge. Students in these programs receive free books, bus tickets, and a childcare subsidy if the need it. The proceeds from HalifaxThinks help to keep these programs running.
Joining us in this conversation may lead to the most liberating thoughts you’ve had in ages. There are no papers, no tests, no exams and no pressure. Plus, your donation will help to pay the costs for another group of equally keen learners who need your support.
